Man arrested for bribery

LINDEN – Linden Captain refuses bribery and says no to corruption.

A motorist was arrested after he attempted to bribe Captain Perenay Bedessie of the Linden Police Station on 20 May.

Capt Bedessie stood his ground when the motorist offered him a bribe of R180 on Bram Fischer Drive.

According to Linden SAPS spokesperson Captain Alex Vermaak, Capt Bedessie was on his way home after a cluster meeting when he saw a motorist skip a red traffic light in view of a marked police vehicle.

“The motorist nearly collided with another vehicle as a result and the other motorist had to swerve to get out the way,” said Capt Vermaak.

He explained that Capt Bedessie then stopped the motorist and simply asked him to drive more carefully.

However, according to Capt Vermaak, the motorist was rude and aggressive towards Capt Bedessie.

“After a while the motorist toned down and then took out the R180 and tried to give it to the Captain, who then called for backup. The man was arrested for reckless and negligent driving as well as for bribery.”

The man appeared in Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 21 May.

Randburg Sun recently reported that Linden SAPS officials were arrested for corruption on 14 May.
