Fairland resident makes the finals

FAIRLAND – Cecilia Mdluli makes the top 12 in entrepreneurial competition.

Cecilia Mdluli is one of 12 finalists in the Apprentesses Leadership Competition. The competition was launched this year and aims to empower young women to become leaders. Finding a genuine mentor has been her challenge, so the competition came at the right time.

In order to enter, the Fairland resident had to submit a five-year plan; not only for business but encompassing all her goals. She also had to submit her CV and motivate why she wanted to win. The prize, for the B.Com graduate, is worth aiming for. The winner will be mentored by former Mrs South Africa and business woman, Fikile Mekgoe. She will also be provided the tools for success through workshops run by leaders of varying successful companies.

When the 43 contestants started the competition, they had to start their own businesses. They could do anything, but they had six weeks for that business to generate R3 000. Cecilia saw the gap with the load shedding and sold blankets and rechargeable lights. She also used her IT background to create static websites for NGOs.

On 29 June the finalists were announced and their next challenge is to raise R5 000 for the Kya Foundation, either in cash or goods. On 1 August the finalists will take part in a family day against human trafficking. Between now and then, “Not for Sale” shirts will be available for purchase.

Finally, the winner will be announced on 8 August.

When asked how she balances her day job in IT and the demands of the competition, she is quite frank. “I only get three hours of sleep on some days. This competition has honed my time-management skills. You will be amazed how much time can be wasted in front of the TV.”

“Not for Sale” T-shirts are available in long sleeve (R150) and short sleeve (R100) and are either black or red. They are available in S-Small, M-Medium, L-Large, XL-Extra Large, XXL, XXXL. Orders can be placed with Mdluli directly.
