Heartfelt cupcakes get cold shoulder

PARKTOWN – Mother tries to deliver cupcakes in memory of daughter but is turned away by school.

The Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg reportedly turned away the mother of Klara Göttert, the 14-year old girl who committed suicide at the Northgate Shopping Centre in August.

According to News24, Liesl Göttert had planned to deliver cupcakes at the school on her late daughter’s birthday which was on 27 November, but was turned away as the school reportedly sent an email saying that they do not want to glorify the victim as that could incite imitations.

However, Göttert sees this as an important issue that should be given the attention it needs. The mother is reported as saying that bringing the cupcakes was a way to spread sunshine and create awareness. It was also meant to be a way to thank those who attended the funeral. The Götterts have now subsequently ended the cupcakes initiative.

So now, instead of cupcakes on the day, the family would host a dinner where her friends and family will spend that time together and share their memories about Klara.

The school’s marketing and public relations manager, Savo Ceprnich was asked about the report, but replied, “Unfortunately I am not in a position to comment about the topic mentioned.” When Liesl Göttert was contacted she replied that she had nothing more to say that had already been mentioned in the report.
