Exposed cables pose a danger to residents
BROMHOF – A concerned resident reported damaged Telkom boxes with exposed cables more than six weeks ago – still not repaired.
A concerned resident reported damaged Telkom telephone boxes with exposed cables to Telkom for the first time on 6 November and weekly thereafter until 7 December.
Peter Davel, who is the caretaker at Bush Lodge in Bromhof, said technicians from Telkom arrived on 19 November, took a photograph with their phones and assured him they needed to show their supervisor the photographs. Yet, nothing happened.

Davel was given a different reference numbers on every occasion he called Telkom to complain about the exposed meter cables and informed that the matter is ”being attended” to. “My main concern is that there are children in the complex who may be harmed if they were to touch the exposed cables. We have heatwaves and lightning storms – anything can happen. At least 15 residences can be affected by the exposed cables,” he said.

Due to the non-service and out of desperation, he eventually contacted the Randburg Sun and subsequently also posted a complainton Telkom’s website.
A Telkom representative from their Beyers Naudé Drive office, Gloria Seabe arrived at the complex on 17 December and also took photographs of the telephone cable boxes. According to Davel, she looked shocked at the dismal state of the boxes. She admitted that there is a record of his complaints on their system and apparently assured him that they will escalate his case and the matter will be attended to.
Comment has been requested and is awaited from Telkom spokesperson Payne Chetty as to why it has taken more than six weeks to attend to this complaint and resolve this issue.
