Road to recovery a technical journey
RANDBURG - Technology has become a tool for drug addicts to help them recover from their addiction.
The process of drug rehabilitation is a tough task that requires willpower, dedication and the correct mindset. However, there are many resources an addict can utilise on their road to recovery, one of which is technology.
Dy Williams, the Public Relations and Social Media Manager at Houghton House Addiction Recovery Centre, is an addict in recovery. Personally, technology helped her in her recovery as she joined support groups on Facebook. However, Williams said there are two sides to cyberspace. “There are different types of groups online. Some will tell you where to buy drugs and use drugs in secret. There is an abundance of information on the internet, it just depends on you and what you are looking for,” Williams added. Private online support groups, motivational readings and articles are also available and a great tool for recovering addicts.

Williams said the online support groups also meant she did not have to go out at night to narcotics anonymous meetings and could spend more time with her child and husband after NA meetings in the day. Houghton House Private Group was a great inspiration to her.
Addiction, recovery and life coach, Sandra Kelly, who is a resident of Robindale, said technological resources can be beneficial but it depends on your emotional state. “Technology can be helpful but not in isolation. It is also important to have balance and for something to occupy the recovering addict’s mind and hands,” Kelly explained.
According to Kelly, an addict can always say no, no matter the circumstances, if they are emotionally in a good place.
