Indian Prime Minister graces South Africans at the Dome

NORTHGATE – Thousands welcome Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi at the Ticketpro Dome.

About 15 000 Indians gathered at the Ticketpro Dome in Northgate on the evening of 8 July to welcome the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Prior to his arrival, the audience was entertained by various musicians and dancers from India and South Africa, highlighting the culture of a diaspora community. The event featured a variety of South African dance and music, including Grammy award-winning artist, Wouter Kellerman. Fans eagerly praised the prime minister and before he took to the podium, the national anthems of both India and South Africa were sung. Modi highlighted the importance of his visit to the country. He focussed mostly on the lives of two icons, Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi.

“Mahatma Gandhi led India’s march to freedom. The forgiveness of Nelson Mandela and his long march to freedom gave birth to the rainbow nation. These two men were an inspiration for all the mankind,” he said. He thanked the audiences for welcoming him warmly. “When I look at you, I think of our ancestors who travelled to the unknown land of South Africa and lived in extreme poverty. They struggled, yet kept going. Indians not only preserved the culture and language but it also gave them new wings to flourish and the beauty of the Indian language continues to enrich the South African community,” he said.

“I am happy to be here. I bring greetings from 1.25 billion Indians back home,” continued Modi. He said he received overwhelming suggestions for his speech through his mobile app – Narendra Modi. “Our ancestors may have been separated in history; our nationalities may be different but our common culture and religions will ensure we remain close and connected both in our hearts and our minds,” explained Modi.
