Department placed about 6 534 pupils

JOBURG – Gauteng Education Department placed about 6 534 pupils in schools around the province.

The Gauteng Department of Education had managed to place over 6 534 pupils in the schools around the province since the placement period commenced.

MEC Phanyaza Lesufi addressed the media on the progress of the online application yesterday in Johannesburg.

He said to date about 3 389 Grade 1 and about 3 145 Grade 8 pupils have been placed at the schools.

The followed placement process allows schools to draw their waiting lists and then submit to the district directors to sign off. Schools will then place pupils according to the approved lists and inform parents of the outcome using different modes of communications such as SMS and letters.

“Pupils were placed according to first, then second and lastly third-choice school options with required documents submitted to the school for verification,” he said.

“Parents will be informed through an SMS or letter regarding the status of their applications. They have seven school days from the date of receiving the notification to confirm acceptance or rejection of placement offers,” said Lesufi.

He indicated that parents who fail to confirm acceptance or rejection of the offer will forfeit such an offer and the next parent will be placed in the available space.

The Department also urged all parents to confirm or reject the placement offers in order to fast track the placement process. Parents who were not happy with the placement offer were advised to approach district director.

“Objections and applications will be dealt with later once the placement process has been completed in September,” he explained.

The Department launched the online application earlier this year with numerous challenges but despite backlogs, was pleased with the progress.

According to Lesufi, the system has proven its value by creating fairness and equity as well as making it easy for parents to apply for placement.
