Awareness to curb road accidents

RANDBURG CBD – Taxi drivers are advised to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy.

3M South Africa (Pty) Ltd has begun its Randburg CBD safety campaign at the taxi rank in a bid to educate drivers about the importance of driving a safe, roadworthy vehicle.

The campaign is being piloted around Johannesburg to ensure that long-distance public transport complies with all safety standards to avoid jeopardising the lives of passengers.

It was established that most drivers resort to cheaper, knock-off reflective tape for the side of their vehicles as they are inexpensive and available on street corners and spare parts outlets. The imitation tape is not decreasing the spate of incidents since it is not visible in the dark.

Khanyisile Madlala from 3M said they partnered with the South African National Taxi Council, Metro police and other taxi associations to educate drivers and owners about this initiative. “We are showing these drivers which is the correct reflective tape to buy and use on their vehicles,” she said.

3M’s technical manager, Vusi Tshabangu, helped a few taxi drivers apply the reflective tape on their taxis and advised them to buy original 3M tape which complies with the South African Bureau of Standards.

Randburg United Long Distance Taxi Association’s public relations officer, Makhudo Mamabolo, said the campaign would help decrease accidents. “We are ensuring that our passengers travel to their destinations in a safe vehicle,” he said.
