Help remove illegal ads

RANDBURG – Sick and tired of illegal adverts littering your area? Why not get involved and help remove them.

Out of a strong dislike of the offensive and illegal advertisements defacing our city, Ferndale-based brand activation agency, Be Salt, has set out to rid Randburg of these ads.

A few weeks ago, the company began to tackle this laborious task, starting with Republic Road, but new posters are plastered up faster than they can be removed. According to City of Johannesburg Bylaws on Advertising, Chapter 2, 3.(1), “No person may erect any advertising sign or use or continue to use any advertising sign or any structure or device as an advertising sign without the prior written approval of the Council.”

The bylaws state that if the advertisements are ‘detrimental to the nature of the environment’, are unsightly, pasted on road signs or any surface of private or council property, they become illegal.

According to Nthatisi Modingoane, the City’s deputy director of communication, “The bylaw enforcement unit removes such posters and compiles [a list of the advertisers]. The offending person is then charged after the removal of all the posters.”

Cas Dreijer, managing partner of Be Salt concluded, “It’s time to step up our efforts and get the community involved.” The company is calling businesses in the area to join this initiative by sending staff out to remove any posters in the streets around their premises. Alternatively, businesses can donate R470 and Be Salt will arrange for someone to do this on their behalf. The R470 will cover cleaning equipment (R70) and a cleaner (at a living wage of R400 for the day).

The police and security companies are also urged to be on the lookout for the perpetrators and take action against them.

This initiative complements residents’ efforts to remove illegal signs from the area.

“The hope is that, at some point, the guys behind this will realise that this form of ‘advertising’ is no longer viable in Randburg. And in the meantime, we’ll continue to do what we can to make a dent in the problem,” concluded Dreijer.
