Windsor West shelter set to open soon

WINDSOR WEST – Homeless people now have somewhere to rest their heads.

The highly-anticipated homeless shelter in Knights Avenue in Windsor West will reportedly open its doors to the public before the end of March.

This according to Alen Grobbler, director of free units within the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Social Development.

The shelter will provide a roof over the heads of displaced persons for a mere R8 per night. Grobbler said the homeless will receive a bed for the night, a shower and a plate of food. “We will also have services like family [interventions], skills development and counselling,” he said.

The shelter will at first house 50 beds and it is one of only two shelters in Joburg’s northern suburbs.

“We could form partnerships with local businesses that could help citizens at the shelter get a job. We could ensure job readiness.”

The old Windsor West Recreational Centre will be one of the few homeless shelters to help displaced persons.

Grobbler said the shelter would appreciate community participation.
