Zandspruit Primary School gets new desks
ZANDSPRUIT – Market Cash and Carry donated a total of 30 'green desks' to Zandspruit Primary School.
Approximately 30 desks, made of previously unrecyclable materials, are expected to provide a huge relief to children of Zandpruit Primary School.
Market Cash and Carry donated the 30 ‘green desks’ to the school on 31 March. The desks were handed over to the school by staff members of the store.

This is a programme driven by the Wildland Trust, a long-standing social sustainability partner of Masscash Wholesale.
The programme supports the recycling and reuse of discarded material, the creation of jobs for recyclers and desk producers and, most importantly, it provides much-needed desks for schoolchildren in need.
“The focus of Masscash Wholesale’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) is primarily on education and nutrition. This is driven by the recognition of the importance of education for all South African children as well as the key role nutrition plays in this regard,” said the company’s sustainability officer Engedzani Dzebu.
She said, to date, Masscash Wholesale has donated a total of 81 container kitchens to schools in need in the country.
‘Green desks’ are produced from the previously unrecyclable material that ended up burned or in a landfill.
This is multi-layered plastic materials and packaging which has been developed to increase the lifespan of products on shelves.

The school principal Joshua Mamabolo said some of the children did not have chairs and were sitting either on the floor or on buckets while doing their school work. He said the new desks would ensure that classes were better arranged and allowed children to learn and write properly.

“We really appreciate their assistance. They have done a lot for us,” he said.
Mamabolo encouraged them to continue helping other schools. “They supply groceries to most of the spaza shops here, so this is their way of ploughing-back and we thank them,” he said.
The children sang choir songs and performed gumboot dances during the handover ceremony.
