New board elected for Randburg Professional Hawkers Association
FERNDALE – The Randburg Professional Hawkers Association chose a new board that oversees the traders at the Randburg taxi rank.
The Randburg Professional Hawkers Association (Rhapa) elected a new board during their general elections.
The elections were held at the Ferndale Recreation Centre on 4 May where eight new board members were elected.
The traders who own stores at the Randburg taxi rank nominated their preferred candidates and then went into several rounds of voting until the members were chosen.
Chairperson of the Northern Taxi Liaison Committee, Charles Moloto explained that since the traders resorted under them, they were involved in the process of the traders’ elections.
“We are happy that the elections were a success and if the traders are happy with the committee we are also happy,” he said.

He pointed out that a lot of work still needs to be done at the rank and that they were very happy to work alongside the traders.
“There are not enough holding bays at the rank and we have been engaging in meetings with the City of Johannesburg to expand the rank. When this work begins we will be adding more stalls that can accommodate the traders,” he added.
He explained that the traders’ interim board that was in place before the elections would officially hand over to the new board members by the end of May.
He also added that the new board members would undergo training to ensure that they understood their individual roles as well as how to best serve the traders.

Moloto said if the traders felt there were inconsistencies with the election, they had until 12 May to lodge their complaints. After that, the new board will be in control for the next two years.
Newly elected chairperson of Rhapa Cosmo City, Ellias Matjeke said he was happy to assume his position as the chairperson and that he would do his utmost to sort out the traders’ issues at the rank.
“There are development challenges that we as traders are facing. As the chairperson I will make sure that the municipality hears and understands our plight here at the Randburg taxi rank,” he said.
