Councillor warns about attempted smash-and-grabs at key intersections in Ward 102
RANDBURG – Ward 102 councillor appeals to the Randburg and Linden police to increase security on two key intersections.
Ward 102 councillor David Potter is growing concerned about reported increases in smash-and-grab crime in the Ward 102 area.
Potter said, “Following reports of an unconfirmed increase in smash-and-grabs and attempted smash-and-grabs at the following key intersections within Ward 102, my office has written to the Station Commanders and Community Policing Forum Chairs of the Linden, Randburg and Sandton Police Stations imploring them to increase visibility, covert and intelligence operations at these key intersections.”
The main intersections Potter has appealed to the police to increase security on are:
- Jan Smuts Avenue corner Republic Road in Bordeaux and Blairgowrie (Randburg/Linden SAPS)
- William Nicol Drive corner Republic Road in Hurlingham Manor and Willowild (Randburg/Sandton SAPS).
According to the councillor, these two key intersections are somewhat problematic as they are on the jurisdiction boundary of two police stations, making the policing responsibility difficult to confirm and pinpoint.
“A joint operation and action plan between the stations is necessary,” he said.
Potter noted that while City councillors have no official oversight of the powers of the police, he hopes that his request will be considered in the interest of the public as urgent.
He continued, “My office will further engage with the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Police to request an increase in visibility at these two key intersections.
“Victims of crimes, not only at these intersections, are requested to report all and any such incidents to the South African Police Service Customer Services Centre without delay.”
