Jan Smuts road marking to be corrected

The new-found bliss felt after Jan Smuts Avenue’s resurfacing was short lived when road markings were painted incorrectly.
The resurfacing was completed within the week ending 9 May but motorists were to wait weeks in vain until any road markings were painted on Jan Smuts.

Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) contractors started painting the markings on 11 June. The intersection of Burnside and Jan Smuts avenues has a right-hand-turning-only-lane arrow which would result in motorists driving into a wall.

The busy intersection of Buckingham and Jan Smuts avenues has one left and one right-turning only arrows but no arrow indicated for traffic wanting to drive straight across into the Valley Centre.

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams requested an on-site meeting on 13 June with JRA officials to identify which road markings urgently need to be corrected.

Randburg Sun participated in the meeting to ensure all concerns by the public were addressed.

“I am pleased that the road resurfacing has been completed but it is worrying that the road markings were painted incorrectly,” said Williams.

After the inspection, Williams felt confident with the promise made by JRA that road markings will be completed and any incorrect signs will be removed urgently.

JRA’s operations manager for marketing and communications, Bertha Peter-Scheepers acknowledged the incorrect markings and added that they will be removed by sandblasting and then repainted.

Peter-Scheepers said that the error was caused by contractors not following due process.

Completion of the road marking is expected by the end of next week (22 June), “JRA does apologise for the temporary inconvenience to road users.”

“I really appreciate the cooperation from the JRA in helping to ensure the road marking is corrected and to keep our commuters safe,” said Williams.
