Ward councillor briefs Silver Stream Retirement village on upcoming elections

RANDPARK – Residents of Silver Stream Retirement Village are briefed on some need-to-know information regarding the upcoming general elections.

Ward councillor Mike Wood addressed residents of Silver Stream Retirement Village on 18 April.

Accompanied by DA shadow MEC for Safety and Security of Gauteng, Kate Lorimer, the pair briefed the residents about the importance of having their say in the upcoming general elections, some recent developments as well as the nature of special votes. This was followed by tea, cake and Easter eggs outside to mark the season, in the presence of delicate sunshine.

The chill of winter creeping into the cosy common room of Silver Stream was not enough to hinder Wood and Lorimer as they delivered passionate speeches detailing the progress that has been made in Johannesburg. Some recent developments were an additional 15 000 Metro police officers who were being trained to be deployed at the time of the briefing.

Wood elaborated that the upkeep of the Johannesburg municipality is prioritised and implemented in collaboration with the City’s Mayor Herman Mashaba and the various arms which govern the City. Using the City of Cape Town as a case study, the ward councillor remarked, “It is a long haul, but it is a city that can come right.”

The competitive spirit between political parties building up to the general elections on 8 May was prevalent in their discussion. The ward councillor explained that the maintenance of different parts of the city is delayed since some allegedly do not show up deliberately. This disrupts proceedings because quorum is not reached.

Special votes will take place on 6 and 7 May where senior citizens will not be obligated to stand in line on 8 May – they may ‘jump’ the ques and go straight to the front. Special votes must be applied for, however, this deadline has lapsed for registration. One must be a registered voter, have a green, bar-coded ID book, smartcard ID or valid temporary identity certificate.
