Randburg resident Tshepo Machitele runs a non-profit organisation (NPO) called Kids with Rhythm, for abandoned and abused children and teenagers.

Machitele said he visits shelters, homes and art organisations to practice different cultural drum layouts so he can give an appropriate sound to the youth, but said that it’s very hard to get funding as an NPO, especially due to lack of support.

According to Machitele, drumming is not only beneficial to children’s mental health and development, but it is also great for helping children develop physical fitness.

Machitele added that with reference to research done on the effects of drumming, there are numerous health benefits from drumming for people with these conditions. Studies have shown that drumming lowers both blood pressure and stress hormones.

He also said that drumming is meditative, inducing relaxed mental states that reduce anxiety and tension. “Drumming is good for people of all ages.”

Drum circles for seniors have been known to help adults in the following areas:

  • Reduce tension
  • Anxiety
  • Depression and stress
  • Boost the immune system
  • Increase energy controlling chronic pain releasing negative feelings making social interactions and feeling a sense of community improving language
  • Improving joint mobility, posture, and motor skills.

Machitele also added that for bookings and or if you would like to donate any musical instruments to Kids with Rhythm contact 084 710 6380 or visit their website , their Facebook page or email hyproject3@gmail.com.
