City’s insourced cleaners to get 50 per cent increase

JOHANNESBURG – The cleaners will now earn about R5 600 a month and will take home R4 000 after deductions with benefits.

The new insourcing initiative at the City of Johannesburg will see salaries of cleaners increase by about 50 per cent and receiving benefits including pension.

This was revealed during a ceremony to welcome the first batch of 450 insourced cleaners held by Mayor Herman Mashaba with the MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services, Ntombi Khumalo at Martindale on 17 August. The City plans on insourcing a total of 1 879 cleaners who previously earned R3 000 a month from contracted service providers.

The cleaners who will be employed on a permanent basis by the City will now earn about R5 600 a month and will take home R4 000 after deductions with benefits including medical aid and pension. Mashaba said the welcoming ceremony was befitting in celebration of Women’s Month as the lives of insourced women would change.

“It is the pride of my life to see these women’s lives change for the better. If I look at their salaries, as much as they will see a big jump and securement of permanent employment, I would like to see their salaries go up in the 2020/2021 budget. I will engage with unions to come up with a one-off special increment so we could make their lives even better,” said Mashaba.

Khumalo said it was heartwarming to see how the recipients have received the insourcing programme and how it would transform their lives. “I’m proud and humbled to be in a position to change lives. This is about empowering and giving dignity to the cleaners and history books will remember this day.”

The insourcing criteria included proof that beneficiaries were working for the City from 3 May 2017 through payslips and bank statements, go through a verification process with home affairs and a vetting process for criminal records. All insourced cleaners will be permanent employees of the City from 1 September this year.
