Mayor makes his point
RANDBURG – The Mayor and JRA conducted a service delivery blitz to address poor road markings, pavement issues and other maintenance activities across Randburg on 15 October.
Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba and MMC for Transport Nonhlanhla Makhuba donned overalls, gas masks and gloves as they joined a Johannesburg Roads Agency service delivery blitz to address poor road markings, pavement issues and other maintenance activities across Randburg.
As it is Transport Month, the City has decided to target one region per day to address service delivery backlogs to work on issues in a blitz.
The mayor, MMC, and their teams visited various sites including road marking sessions in Strijdom Park and Bordeaux, and road reinstatements in Victory Park and Blairgowrie.
Road reinstatements are done after private companies and other entities have dug up sections over pavement to lay cables or pipes. Once work is completed, the JRA will re-cover the area with concrete.
Mashaba said, “This month is Transport Month and the JRA has a crucial role in ensuring that our roads are up to scratch so that residents can feel safer on our roads, and both the MMC and I are here to show support for our officials and our hard workers and the important work that they do.
“It is great to lend a hand on the ground, and when issues are discussed in the office, we have a better understanding of the work that is carried out daily with hands-on experience.”
The blitz is an accelerated maintenance model where the JRA’s internal maintenance teams are concentrated in various areas where there is a maintenance backlog, intending to eliminate it.
Makhuba added, “We are showing our residents that not only do we listen to their pleas and make opportunities and changes where necessary, but we are here to show physical on-the-ground support. There are many backlogs that we are dealing with and, in Region C, we have had major complaints directly from residents and ward councillors about road markings and road reinstatements.
“We will visit various areas, and we hope to do the same over the coming few days in different regions.
“Even though the mayor and I will move away from this area, depots will work at their maximum capacity to carry on the blitz.”
