Eastwood Avenue traffic circle nears completion
RANDPARK RIDGE – With the construction of a brand-new traffic circle on Eastwood Avenue in Randpark Ridge, some concerned residents are worried about its effectiveness and safety.
A brand-new traffic circle on Eastwood Avenue in Randpark Ridge is in the final stages of its construction.
However, some concerned residents are worried about its effectiveness and safety, as well as the length of time it has taken to complete the project.
Resident Steven Schild said, “On Eastwood Road heading towards Beyers Naudé Drive, the road is far too wide and as a result, the traffic circle will not slow traffic down.”
He worried that due to the placement of the circle, the circle working as a traffic-calming measure for vehicles heading towards Beyers Naudé Drive would not be effective as vehicles do not have to slow down too much to avoid it.

“I have stood and observed this and feel strongly that ratepayer’s money being spent is being totally wasted,” he continued.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency’s Esther Schmidt responded to Schild’s complaint with feedback from the site’s main contractor.

“The objective of the project was, however, never that the circle would act as a traffic-calming measure (like a mini circle), but rather as an accessibility measure for Eastwood Road vehicles to enter into Scott Avenue,” the developer said.
The developer offered recommendations to the JRA and will monitor the road to see if further traffic-calming measures need to be put into place in the future upon full completion of the project.
