Ward 134 councillor petitions for Northumberland Road safety
NORTH RIDING – Ward 134 councillor Wendy Alexander is appealing for community support in her drive to get a permanent set of traffic lights at the corner of Northumberland Avenue and Felstead Road in North Riding installed.
Ward 134 councillor Wendy Alexander is appealing for community support in her drive to get a permanent set of traffic lights at the corner of Northumberland Avenue and Felstead Road in North Riding installed.
“This intersection is known to be particularly dangerous, and thus I have set up a petition to be presented to the City,” said Alexander.
She added that as Northumberland Avenue was a busy commuter road and often had many motorists travelling over the speed limit, it posed a danger to nearby residents and employees of businesses near the intersection.
“The main aim of this petition is to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians in this area. This section of road is in great need of traffic calming. There are many businesses and their customers, including the nearby SPCA, who are put in serious risk of a high-speed accident every time they slow down to turn into Felstead Road or the SPCA,” continued Alexander.
She said over the many years she had been a ward councillor in the area, she had been informed of numerous accidents that had occurred at the intersection on a very regular basis.
“What makes the situation even more problematic is that many motorists do not abide by traffic laws put in place for their safety. So not only is it a problem to navigate turning across Northumberland Avenue into Felstead Road or nearby businesses, but people have to take serious risks in avoiding this danger,” said Alexander.
Details surrounding the petition for the traffic calming measures and how residents can get involved can be found on the Ward 134 Facebook page.
“I encourage all residents who are concerned about their and their fellow residents’ safety to sign this petition, as this will get the ball rolling for the City to evaluate the site to see what the best solution is to put into place.”
