Local Mrs SA contestant aims to grow diabetes awareness

FERNDALE – Mrs South Africa finalist Naledi Marincowitz wants to use her platform to raise awareness about diabetes.

Mrs South Africa finalist Naledi Marincowitz wants to use her platform to raise awareness about diabetes.

The mother of two boys has lived and worked in Randburg and surrounds for the past nine years. The senior programme manager at a bank in the area chose to enter the Mrs South Africa pageant as an opportunity to try something new.

For the University of Pretoria graduate, diabetes holds a special place in her heart after she lost her mom to Type 2 and gestational diabetes. November being Diabetes Awareness Month and 14 November being World Diabetes Day, marked the perfect time to get to know the finalist who is endeavouring to bring the conversation to the forefront.

In her spare time, Marincowitz has established an Instagram account where she blogs about her diet to help inform followers on food options to reduce their chances of becoming diabetic.

She is grateful for her support structure which included her church, and family and friends who assisted her when she needed it. Marincowitz encouraged all to ask for help whenever they find themselves in situations where they feel they are not able to handle it.

The top 25 finalists were announced on 13 November at an outdoor event at Casalinga Organic Farm in Muldersdrift and the winners will be crowned next year.

“It is such a phenomenal opportunity. I think when people hear the word pageant, they think it’s a competition… the women hate each other, and that’s not at all what I have found… This is not your typical pageant, it is an empowerment movement.”

Marincowitz concluded by saying, “You will get in life exactly what you are willing to go after so stop being afraid to go after and ask for things.”
