5th Road bridge collapses due to flooding

NORTHWOLD - The 5th Road Bridge in Northwold collapsed due to flooding on the evening of 28 December.

The bridge, which had been previously ear-marked by the Johannesburg Road Agency for urgent upgrades, is situated at the Sunrise Estate Retirement Village, whose residents use it as their primary exit and entry point, and have been severely affected.

In a statement released by the City of Johannesburg, communications specialist Dudu Lushaba said, “The 5th Road Bridge had previously been identified by the JRA for urgent upgrades. As an interim measure, the JRA has appointed an engineer and a contractor to design and construct a temporary access road off Malibongwe Drive, North of the N1. The construction is planned to commence on 30 December and is expected to be completed within two days.” Lushaba said, “The JRA has prioritized the appointment of an engineer to assist with the long-term design solution of the bridge which requires capacity improvement. She added, “The construction of the long term solution is anticipated to take approximately six months, the start date of which will be confirmed once the engineer has been appointed.”
