Bordeaux residents take road matters into their own hands

BORDEAUX – Residents and members of the Bordeaux South Residents Association made their own plans to fix potholes and paint roadside curbs in their suburb.

Since the end of 2020, residents and members of the Bordeaux South Residents Association have been engaged in plans to maintain the roads in their suburb themselves.

“As a community, we are fed up waiting for the [Johannesburg Roads Agency] to fix the issues in our suburb, so we decided to paint our roadside curbs and fill potholes at our own expense and effort,” said chairperson Trishana Moodley.

Residents communicated with each other on several platforms voicing their concern about the state of the roadside curbs and potholes in the Bordeaux South area and after numerous calls to the agency to no avail, residents took matters into their own hands.
“After a call to the community, a resident told us that he would generously donate 10 to 12 bags of asphalt, and we extended a further call to residents for more. This resulted in the collection of a large amount of asphalt capable of filling numerous potholes on our suburb’s roads,” said Moodley.

She said fellow residents were highly supportive of the initiative, and many pitched in to help lay the tar in potholes with the proper equipment and paint roadside curbs with high-quality paint.

“Honestly, this is something that City entities should be doing regularly, and we believe that they are not. We pay our rates and taxes for the upkeep of our roads and unfortunately if no work is done and our streets decay further, residents have to take this upkeep into their own hands.”

Moodley applauded the community spirit. She also made it clear that the residents’ association informed the agency of all the planned work before commencing.

The Randburg Sun has contacted the agency about some of the issues raised by the residents’ association and is awaiting a response.
