Sunrise Estate Bridge finally to be rebuilt after flash floods in December
NORTHWOLD – The only link between a retirement village and the outside world will be rebuilt
The Sunrise Estate bridge which was washed away in flash floods in December last year, will be rebuilt.
Ward 101 councillor Dalue Cele said work would start on 5 July.
“The elderly residents at the Sunrise Estate on 5th Road in Northwold will at last breathe a sigh of relief, as this bridge was their only connection to the outside world, especially in the event of an emergency,” he said.
“Over the past five years, I have been assisting to escalate their complaints about the deteriorating state of the only bridge that connected the estate to other roads in Northwold. The Johannesburg Roads Agency [JRA] has been dragging its feet for many years in terms of addressing the dangerous state of this bridge before it was washed away by the flash floods.”
Cele said he had organised JRA to conduct an investigation of the bridge two years ago, which found it in a dangerous state and needing to be replaced.
“This bridge was part of the R200-billion repair and upgrading backlog of Johannesburg’s power, water, and road networks. If Johannesburg is to reach its full potential and provide the quality of life that residents deserve, the City needs to invest to clear this backlog.”
Questions were sent to JRA communications officer Mosa Makhalima, and Randburg Sun will report her comments when they are received.
