Recent successes and challenges in Ward 101

RANDBURG – There is far less crime in Golden Harvest Park than there was a few years back, thanks to visibility by police and security companies.

The resurfacing of roads, upgrade of Golden Harvest Park and decreases in power outages are some of the things Ward 101 councillor Dalu Cele is grateful for, but there were still challenges in his area.

On a side note, Cele will not be running for re-election at this year’s local government elections.

In his five-year term, he has had his share of challenges. The greatest of these, he said, were by-law infringements.

“Still to this day, the worst obstacle is street trading, illegal advertising, homeless people living in open spaces and other by-law matters,” he said.

“We used to have frequent power outages in Noordhang, Bromhof and Sonneglans but those are fewer now. We do have sporadic crime incidents, just like every other suburb.”

The park has also had its old and dangerous mayoral lapa demolished, ablution facilities upgraded, outdoor gym installed and soccer field resurfaced.

“There has also been an audit of all the people living illegally in the structures in the park, and those who have qualified have been put on the list for housing.”

The installation of numerous streetlights in the ward and resurfacing of Tin Road, Bellairs Drive and Hawken Avenue give Cele more to smile about.

Another matter that should be resolved, finally after years of waiting, is the construction of a new bridge to connect Sunrise Estate to the outside world.

The bridge was old and had been deemed dangerous. In December, flash floods left it destroyed, and now plans are in place to construct a stronger bridge.

He thanked residents for working with him to improve these matters.
