Pikitup to clear all the rubbles on Kelvin Street in Kya Sand

KYA SAND – Pikitup, with the assistance of private security guards, is expected to clear rubble and garbage close to Kelvin Street until December 8.

Pikitup has embarked on an operation to clear rubble and rubbish dumped in an open land on Kelvin Street in Kya Sand.

Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp said Pikitup would clear the dump in phases with the operation starting on December 1 until December 8.

According to him, in the past Pikitup employees had tried to clear the area of rubbish but were allegedly intimidated by waste keepers, who allegedly started the illegal dumping site, and had to abandon the work. “They have a private security company to help them during this big operation. JMPD and police will also help if the need arise,” said Steenkamp.

He added business owners had tried to close off the road to try and prevent the illegal dumping. Steenkamp said some of the business owners and residents who lived or worked nearby complained of toxic smoke emanating from the dump when people burned the rubbish.

Residents who may see suspicious activity in the area or see illegal dumpers, could report these using the WhatsApp number 082 779 1361. Residents would need to add full details, including the date, place, description and the registration number of the vehicle being used to dump. Residents can also report incidents to JMPD using the number 011 375 5911.
Pikitup Randburg Depot regional manager Khumbuzile Kolisi said, “We will have to clear this site and secure the place.”
