Olivedale Library likely closed erroneously by Joburg Water
A pre-termination notice shows a neighbour should have been shut down, not the public library.
The Olivedale Library was likely closed erroneously.
The confusion surrounding why the library’s water was turned off, and its subsequent closure since late March, cannot even be explained by Joburg Water.
Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau was livid this had happened at all, as it deprived residents of a source of knowledge and place to study.

He has a photo of the pre-termination notice, which was addressed to a private resident but delivered to the public library before its water shutdown.
Joburg Water acting communications manager, Seipati Nyawuza said she could not confirm whether this was the case as, on Joburg Water’s system, the library was not supposed to be turned off. Its account is in the green on their side. “If that’s the case, it is indeed an error,” she said.

“I will get the team to attend to this as a matter of urgency,” she said.
Bittkau was livid that this apparent mistake had only been noticed once the Randburg Sun brought the matter to the attention of Joburg Water.
Bette Kun from the users group Friends of Olivedale Library (Fools), questioned how Joburg Water could not even know the library had been cut off.

While another Fools member, Eleanor Woodman complained that for over a month students could not make use of the computers at the library.
