ALERT: Beyers Naudé Drive currently closed by police
Motorists are advised to avoid the area. and use alternative routes.
Police have closed Beyers Naudé Drive near Zandspruit and are monitoring a dispute between two groups of street vendors today, October 20.
Honeydew police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Stanton said there has been no violence yet and the situation is not volatile. Still, a large crowd of angry people came together and the police did not want to take chances.
They are monitoring and trying to mediate the situation.
Stanton said a community leader from each of the two groups – one of South Africans and the other of foreigners – are discussing their grievances peacefully.
“Yesterday there was an incident where residents piled up tyres and set them alight but that was all the trouble there was,” he said.
Honeydew Community Policing Forum public relations officer Michael Steyn confirmed the road closure and urged motorists to avoid the area.
Alternative routes:
If heading north on Beyers Naudé Drive, turn left on Johan Road and then turn right to drive down one of the streets that go through Honey Park, Alsef AH and Ruimsig before meeting up with the main road, Peter Road. There you turn right and follow it until you reach Beyers Naudé Drive, a very little way past Zandspruit.
A longer but safer alternative would be to use Hendrik Potgieter Road and the N14 to join onto Beyers Naudé Drive deeper into Muldersdrift.
