WATCH: Ferndale animation studio creates exciting feature film, Headspace
Animators and artists cannot wait to share their feature film with the world.
A Ferndale animation studio is proud to launch an exciting feature film that is the product of 10 years of work.

Roughly 60 animators, voice actors and artists will see their names in the credits when Headspace has its international theatrical release on September 15.

The story follows the good aliens of Space Protection Force taking up residence inside the brain of 14-year-old Norman through their microscopic spaceship SPF50. They must join forces with Norman and his school friends to save Earth from the intergalactic villain, Zolthard, who has taken control of the headmistress.

“It’s basically a fun, family-friendly alien and zombie film,” Paul Meyer told Randburg Sun. He and Gerhard Painter together produced and directed Headspace. “It has lots of humour, family values and great animation. It’s a fast-paced and rewatchable 90 minutes that is worth more than the price of a movie ticket.”

Painter agreed. “We are very proud to show this to people and we know they will have a great outing if they go see it,” he said. “Without giving too much away, it’s about a child who lives in a dreamworld most of the time but he has a group of friends who help him cope in the the real world and challenge and help him to be great. He comes out of it more confident and realises it is actually him who holds the group together.”

The pair explained that they took over work on the film from other producers. “The greatest challenge we had in creating the film was every change that we had to make. We had to decide whether to make a change, whether in terms of making the story better, stronger, funnier, improving the graphics and characters. There was a lot to remake. That is why it took so long,” Meyer said.

Luma Animation also provides the CGI and VFFX on Shaka Ilembe. Following the film’s theatrical run, it will be dubbed into Afrikaans, isiZulu and Swahili for television.
