Cosmo City gets free health screenings

Community members do aerobics, blood pressure and diabetes tests, and many other screenings at community event.

The importance of healthy living was discussed and encouraged at a community event hosted by the City of Johannesburg Health Department in Cosmo City.

The day saw gazebos set up in Extension 6 where all manner of free screenings, tests and treatment took place, on September 26. All this was in line with Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Month.

Health professionals, police and community members gather at the event.

“The event was addressing the prevalence of lifestyle health conditions, or chronic conditions, which, when properly managed can reduce the burden on sufferers, their families as well as the public health services budget,” said the city’s head of health promotion in region C, Lesiba Peter Mphahlele.

Community members find out more about the health services available to them.

“In support of healthy communities… [we] organised aerobics, blood pressure and diabetes tests, immunisations for children, cervical cancer testing, HIV testing and treatment on site, STI tests and healthy sexual behaviour (promotion of condom use and regular HIV testing), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and family planning.”
