Ferndale residents frustrated over state of recreation centre’s toilets

The spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg, Nthatisi Modingoane, responds to the resident’s concerns.

Residents of Ferndale expressed deep dissatisfaction and frustration over the ongoing issues plaguing the Ferndale Recreational Centre, particularly its deteriorating ablution facilities.

Leon Nel, a resident, shared his experience attempting to book the Ferndale Recreation Centre for a competition in May 2024. “I enquired about the Ferndale Recreation Centre. It is available, but they do not want to let it out due to blocked toilets,” Nel explained. He expressed disbelief at the situation, questioning how essential facilities could remain unusable despite community needs.

Nel revealed the frustrating exchange with the manager of the recreation centre, stating, “The manager suggested that they not charge me rent for the hall, but in exchange, I must pay for somebody to fix the toilets.” He condemned the situation as ‘pathetic’, emphasizing that community centres should be functional and accessible to residents.

He went on to explain that nobody has gotten back to him since his initial enquiry and they do not seem interested in solving the problem. Criticising the state of the centre, Nel described it as ‘dirty and in a disgusting state of neglect and disrepair’.

The toilets in the centre often experience leaks and blockages.

He expressed his reluctance to use the facility, naming instances of mismanagement and poor communication from the centre’s management. “The management there has also let me down on various occasions through double bookings and not letting me know about it,” Nel added. “I arrive with my dancers, and the hall is occupied or unusable, with no explanation or alternative.”

Nel’s frustration is echoed by many residents who have faced similar challenges when attempting to use the facility for community events and gatherings.

In response to the residents’ concerns the spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg, Nthatisi Modingoane, outlined measures being taken to address the issues. “The reported issue of blocked toilets experienced a delay in resolution due to facility management being in the early stages of January,” Modingoane explained. “However, upon returning from annual leave, the recreation officer promptly addressed the blocked toilets, demonstrating dedication and collaboration with internal stakeholders to resolve the issue.”

The Ferndale Recreational Centre is a community hub facing challenges.

In terms of long-term maintenance and functionality, Modingoane emphasized the city’s commitment to maintaining all its facilities through a planned maintenance programme, acknowledging budget constraints may occasionally impact execution.

He also highlighted the active role community groups play in the facility’s upkeep and maintenance. “The City of Joburg welcomes and encourages continued community involvement, acknowledging that participation can significantly enhance the overall improvement and long-term sustainability of the Ferndale Recreation Centre.”

“The city is open to discussions regarding any specific contributions or support that the community deems beneficial for the well-being of the facility. This inclusive dialogue will ensure that the community’s ideas and initiatives align with the city’s goals for the recreation centre.”
