Water is pumping out of the pipe onto the road, causing thousands of litres of fresh water to go to waste for more than 20 days.

Shabalala explained that a section of the water pipeline in the street was damaged by flash floods, which resulted after heavy rains which occurred on March 5 in areas around the City of Johannesburg. “The section that was damaged was also washed away in the floods. However, the pipe burst was repaired and the job completed by JW teams on April 1.”
Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp, who has been escalating the issue, confirmed that the JW team conducted repairs, but these are temporary, with little rocks and logs holding up the pipe. They still need to finalise the contractor work.

The pipe is located under the road, but at the moment it is exposed. making it easy for it to be damaged, especially during heavy rains. Steenkamp said that he will continue to push for progress, and keep residents informed as further details are made available.

He added that the continuous flooding of Bosbok Road presented a serious safety hazard. “The water flowing underneath, and on top of, the road compromises road integrity, reduces support, and increases the risk of vehicles hydroplaning or pedestrians slipping.”
