JMPD to assist in taking back the greenbelt on CR Swart Drive

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department is aware of the situation at the CR Swart Drive bridge greenbelt.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has confirmed that they are aware of the ongoing concerns from residents about the green space on CR Swart Drive.

The greenbelt area on the northern bank of the stream, along the CR Swart Drive bridge, has been taken over by waste pickers and displaced persons who have built shacks. Business owners and residents in the area have been facing numerous challenges at the bridge, which include waste dumping and a high rate of crime.

JMPD spokesperson explained that their regional office has been in contact with the Environmental Health Inspector regarding this matter.
“We understand that the local councillor has also informed Environmental Health that a business association intends to fence the spruit, and Environmental Health plans to arrange a site inspection for this purpose.”

The Strydom Park Ratepayers Association (SPRA) recently received permission to erect a perimeter fence around the greenbelt area.
Fihla said that officers will be dispatched to the area for an investigation and preparation for an imminent operation.

“This operation will aim to address the concerns raised by residents and facilitate the safe and lawful use of the green space. Our assistance will likely involve engaging with the individuals present, ensuring bylaws are adhered to, and supporting any planned fencing efforts by the residents or business association.”

He added that addressing complex issues involving individuals occupying public spaces often requires careful planning, coordination with multiple stakeholders (such as Environmental Health and local councillors), and adherence to due process.

“This can sometimes lead to a longer resolution time than anticipated. We are now actively moving towards an operation to resolve the situation. We appreciate the residents’ patience and their efforts to improve their community. We are committed to working with all parties involved to find a sustainable solution.”
