Major donation supports South African animal shelters
Absolute Pets has donated over R400 000 in dog food to four South African animal rescues, providing much-needed support during tough economic times for animal care.
Four South African animal rescue organisations have received a generous surprise from national retailer Absolute Pets.
Each organisation was gifted a donation of dog food valued at more than R100 000.

The four organisations, Dead Animals Walking and Mdzananda from Cape Town and Animal Anti-Cruelty League Johannesburg and New Hope Animal Rescue from Gauteng, were informed this week of the donation. The contribution is a recognition of the important work they do for animal welfare in their communities.

Genevieve Adams, the marketing manager at Absolute Pets, said animal welfare was central to the company’s mission. “With 175 stores nationwide, Absolute Pets has a strong connection with local animal welfare communities across the country. Supporting the work they do is a major focus for us.”
As the cost of living rises, many South Africans are struggling to care for their pets. The donation is therefore a welcome relief for these rescue centres, which rely on donations to care for the animals.
New Hope Animal Rescue in Johannesburg received nearly 700kg of dog food, valued at R156 075. New Hope’s manager Kevin Stirling expressed the organisation’s gratitude for the support. “We have a lot of work to do in re-homing our dogs, and this generous donation allows us to continue to house, feed, rehabilitate, and stimulate the nearly 80 dogs in our care.”
Carren Nickloes from the Animal Anti-Cruelty League said, “This support not only addresses the animals’ immediate nutritional needs but also enhances their overall well-being. We are profoundly grateful to Absolute Pets for their ongoing partnership and support.”
To date, Absolute Pets has donated more than R1 million in pet food and products. This week’s donation marks the largest single contribution the company has made. Seeing the impact on both the staff and the animals has made the effort worthwhile.
For the organisations involved, this donation represents more than just food; it is a lifeline that will help them continue their work in protecting and caring for animals in need.
