14 month reinstatement remains open in Ferndale

Joburg Water has failed to fill the reinstatement on Pretoria Avenue in Ferndale for over a year.

The reinstatement on Pretoria Avenue in Ferndale has remained open for over a year since Johannesburg Water repaired the pipe burst.

Contractors excavated the road following the first major burst on the pipe in March of 2024. The road was left with a large hole, and the rubble is still not removed. Motorists are forced to use one lane on the busy road. The area is not only an eyesore but a danger as it is close to the pavement and is next to the school.

The exposed pipe suffered another burst in August 2024. The entity did the repair but did not do the reinstatements. In August 2024, spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said that the entity is aware and will remove the rubble and reroute the pipe using a special bender.

“It needs to be rerouted because it is in line with a stormwater drain belonging to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA). Once this is received, the Johannesburg Water team will do backfilling and a job card for reinstatement work will be created and issued to the JRA. The work is scheduled to take place within the next week (August 2024).”
