Blairgowrie-based Megan Archer conquered Zwartkops Raceway during the Formula Monoposto ladies-only race on Women’s Day.

The race on August 9 was an exciting event, honouring and celebrating the ladies involved behind the scenes, as well as those behind the steering wheel. This race was open to all ladies who qualify for a Motorsport South Africa (MSA) license and can lay their hands on a car that complies with Formula Monoposto rules and MSA safety standards.

Archer took to the track for the Formula Monoposto race under the Formula Libra banner and achieved something she has been chasing for a long time, and she finally conquered Zwartkops Raceway.

“This track has been my nemesis for years, but today, I can proudly say: no more.”

The qualifying round saw her post a time of 1:29.512, which put her at the very back of the grid. But the position was just a number – the real battle was against herself and the clock in Race 1.

“In Race 1, I brought the first breakthrough. I smashed my qualifying time with a 1:26.252 lap, moving me up to 16th on the grid for Race 2.”

Archer bagged another personal best in Race 2 with a time of 1:24.320.

She explained that with each lap, her confidence grew. “I pushed harder, dealt with a few lockups and overshot corners, and even had the rear end step out a few times. But I kept it on the black stuff, stayed focused, and completed both races.”

In total, Archer cut her lap time by an incredible 5.16 seconds over the course of the day, to finish seventh overall, proving that perseverance pays off. “I took part in the first ever women’s only single seater race ever in South African soil. This was an overwhelming event for me, with 19 Girls on the track, we conquered all the critics and showed up and made History at Zwartkops Raceway.”
