Water restored after week-long Sharonlea and Olivedale outage

Sharonlea and Olivedale residents are breathing a sigh of relief after Johannesburg Water resolved pipe bursts and valve issues that left households dry for several days.

Residents of Sharonlea and Olivedale have water again after days of frustration caused by repeated pipe bursts and a faulty pressure valve. Several streets, including Keel Street and Geelhout Street, were left without water for up to eight days.

Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau confirmed that the faulty pressure valve, which had caused multiple leaks, has now been repaired. “That has been resolved now, but it’s not the first time it has happened.”

Bittkau added that while repairs have been completed, the handling of the crisis highlighted ongoing concerns with Johannesburg Water’s management, with residents saying that Johannesburg Water removed water tanks too soon, leaving households without any relief.

“There’s definitely something wrong with the way Johannesburg Water is running. Residents who pay taxes and rates need water. That should be more important than opening a new depot.”

Although water has been restored, some residents remain sceptical, saying they will only believe the issue is behind them if there are no further breakages in the coming weeks.
