Sharonlea racers dominate the Historic Single Seater Championship
Father, son, and uncle, Michael, Alan, and Peter Kernick, had solid performances in the fourth round of the Historic Single Seater Championship held at Zwartkops Raceway.
Father, son, and uncle had great performances at the recent fourth round of the Historic Single Seater Championship at Zwartkops Raceway.
The Kernick family did not only share the racetrack; they featured in the same category, the historic formula vee class. Micheal, the son, drove the 1965 Capital MK1, his father, Alan, was in the 1988 Tasman, and uncle Peter raced the 1973 Witter Vee.

Michael explained that it was a good and special day for him, racing his two heroes. “It was really nice having two generations of the same family in the same class, and racing with and against my uncle and dad was special.”

In the qualifying round the trio managed to make good positions and times. Michael finished first in class, Peter was third, and Alan took sixth place in class, out of the nine cars racing. “The Capital was running,” said Michael, “but dad’s car gave us troubles, so we worked to improve it. My uncle went well and had good pace.” After working on Alan’s car it got better, but still not where it needed to be.

In race 1, Michael had clutch issues in the Capital, but he put up a good fight and managed to win the race, setting the quickest lap in the class. His uncle kept the third spot. Unfortunately, Alan’s 1988 Tasman faced challenges, and he stopped after four laps.
“I noticed there was a problem with the clutch,” Michael said, speaking of his own car. “I did a quick fix to sort the problem, but it did not work, so I knew the race would be tricky. I had to do something special to get the car off the line quick, using second gear.”

The trio was back again for race 2, with Michael starting in poll. They had good races, with Michael and Peter battling for first spot. The Capital proved to be the best, as Michael won the race and set the fastest lap in class. Uncle Peter finished second and Alan settled for sixth position.
“It was a magical weekend for the 1965 Capital MK1,” said Michael, “as its the oldest car in the whole race and I managed to be fastest in qualifying, set fastest lap time in class in both races, and won in both races. I am happy. It is a great achievement for the little car.”
