Cycle Lab hosts the schools series, which are five races between May and September, each year. Schools from Gauteng and Tshwane compete, and over 800 high-school children partake on the day. It’s open to all public and private high schools, from U13 to U19 age categories, with the support and sanctioning by Schools Cycling South Africa.

At this year’s event, two of Randjie cyclists were selected for the Gauteng Provincial team, holding the yellow jersey for U15 and U19 boys for the whole season. The school also held the yellow jersey for the first two races, as well as the final race of the season. The yellow jersey means leading and winning the races.

Ria Hoar, the cycling team assistant at the school, explained that at each Cycle Lab mountain bike race they also had several podium places. “During the past cycling season, we delivered some exceptional results against macro schools, such as Die Hoërskool Menlopark, Hoërskool Monument, and Pretoria Boys High School.”

Hoar added that schools cycling is the fastest growing sport. “Our cycling team is a dedicated, fun bunch of children, who enjoy all aspects of cycling. After a training session at Delta Park, there is always time to stop on the way home for a cup of coffee and a croissant, building a healthy team spirit.”

The school offers structured training, skills training, and guidance for athletes wanting to excel at the sport of cycling. Several of their athletes also take part in road cycling, as well as track cycling, with several medals and podiums at national level in the various cycling disciplines. “Each year we invite interested primary school learners to join our team for a fun ride at Delta Park. Children who consider cycling as a sport will develop within the Randjie cycling family.”

The following learners achieved the following results during the Cycle Lab schools series, and were invited to represent Gauteng at the provincial competition.

  • Evan Naude: First – Boys youth 15,
  • Jayden Naude: First – Boys Junior 18,
  • Hannah Lansdell: Third – Girls youth 16, and
