The Independent Institute of Education (IIE)-Vega Bordeaux students flew at the recent 47th annual Loerie Awards, held in Cape Town, earning three awards – one silver and two bronze – in the student categories.
The Loeries are Africa and the Middle East’s premier creative awards, recognising excellence in brand communication, including advertising, digital, design, and communication.

Established in 1978, the Loerie Awards are considered the region’s highest accolade for creativity and innovation, celebrating fresh thinking and outstanding execution.
Darren Meltz, copywriting and strategy lecturer at IIE-Vega Bordeaux, explained that the Loeries is a benchmark for creativity in South Africa. “Everyone in the brand communication industry knows the Loeries. It’s where Vega’s visibility really counts.”
The project that won the silver Loerie, in the Student – Packaging Design category, was Die Vrylopende Afrikaner, by Ester Terblanche, Tayla Rhodes, Vincent Wynne, and Stefan Milos, from Vega Bordeaux.
Terblanche and Rhodes recently graduated with an IIE Bachelor of Arts in Digital Design degree, Wynne completed his IIE Bachelor of Arts in Creative Brand Communications degree, and Milos is currently completing his IIE Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design qualification.
Their project also received two golds, one silver, and a craft certificate at the 2024 Pendoring Awards, which celebrate South African indigenous language creativity, and the best of local talent.

Reacting to their achievement, the team said they were pleasantly surprised. “It feels really good and validating for the amount of work we put into this project,” said Terblanche.
“I still have imposter syndrome, so it’s comforting to know that all our effort was worth it. Everyone dreams of winning a Loerie. It’s what I aspired to as a Vega student.”
Die Vrylopende Afrikaner is a packaging campaign celebrating the carefree, loving spirit of Afrikaans people.
“It’s always rewarding to see our students’ work recognised,” said Meltz. “Our approach encourages ideas to develop organically through the curriculum, and lecturers constantly look for concepts with award potential.”
Two Vega School Cape Town projects each earned a bronze Loerie in the Student – Radio Commercials & Branded Content category.
