Steenkamp urges residents to engage in 2026

As 2026 begins, councillor Devon Steenkamp urges residents to turn frustration into action by participating in community work and supporting efforts to build a responsive city.

Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp has opened the new year with a message encouraging residents, supporters and community partners to stay active and engaged as the city heads into a demanding election period.

He wished residents a warm welcome back after the holiday break and hoped they returned refreshed after what he described as a challenging year.

Looking ahead, Steenkamp said his focus for 2026 will centre on stronger oversight, pushing for long-overdue infrastructure improvements and building a city that responds more effectively to the needs of residents.

He noted that this year’s election adds urgency, as support will be key for a government that can deliver services consistently.

Steenkamp is also looking forward to residents playing a direct role in shaping the city’s future. He stressed the importance of being correctly registered to vote, adding that the upcoming election provides an opportunity for real change in a city where many feel frustrated by slow progress.

He encouraged residents to remain active in community life through clean-up days, reporting service issues without delay and attending public meetings.

He said that safety structures and volunteer groups across the ward rely on people who are willing to participate and support constructive, fact-based problem-solving.

In his New Year message, Steenkamp called on residents to approach the year with a ‘can-do attitude,’ saying 2026 should be the year frustration becomes momentum.

He believes that safe, clean and dignified neighbourhoods are possible when communities work together and continue to push for a city government that serves its people with integrity.
