Ward councillor demands action on an eight-month-old outstanding road repair in Robin Hills

An outstanding road repair left behind after a Joburg Water repair has turned Eland Street into a dangerous obstacle course, with the councillor demanding urgent action.

An outstanding road repair in the middle of Eland Street in Robin Hills has become a daily nightmare for motorists, eight months after it was first dug up during a water repair.

The problem began when Johannesburg Water dug up the road to fix a leaking underground pipe. While the leak itself was repaired, the section of road was never patched and resurfaced. Instead, a deep, uneven crater remains in the centre of the street, creating dangerous driving conditions for residents.

Motorists are forced to slow down or swerve into the opposite lane to avoid damaging their vehicles. The situation becomes even more dangerous at night when the crater is difficult to see. Drivers can hit it unexpectedly and cause damage to tyres, rims, and suspension.

There are no temporary warning measures for motorists.

Ward 99 councillor Hendrik Bodenstein said the issue has been repeatedly reported, but little progress has been made.

“This ‘hole’ in Robin Hills has been here for the past eight months, and every time there’s been a complaint, JRA says they’re busy with backlogs. The cars need to drive all the way around, and this road is completely damaged.

“This is the state of a lot of roads in this area where there’s been water leaks, and nothing’s been done about it.”

The unrepaired road not only poses a safety risk but also highlights a problem in the area, where infrastructure repairs are often left incomplete.

Until the road is properly resurfaced, Eland Street remains an obstacle course and a growing source of frustration for the Robin Hills community.

Joburg Water was sent questions, and their response will be published once made available.
