Joint operation targets illegal Zandspruit structures

Authorities demolished illegal structures and impounded a range of goods during a multidisciplinary operation along Marina Drive in Zandspruit, with five agencies combining forces in the Ward 114 action.

A multidisciplinary law enforcement operation was conducted in Ward 114 along Marina Drive in Zandspruit, targeting illegal street trading, unauthorised car washes and structures that had taken root in the area.

The operation, which fell under Region C, brought together the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, the South African Police Service, Single Law Enforcement, Pikitup and the Community Policing Forum.

The joint effort reflected the city’s approach of coordinating multiple agencies to address what officials describe as persistent contraventions of the Street Trading By-laws and related legislation.

By the end of the operation, two car washes had been demolished along with four illegal structures. A tipper truck was needed to remove the rubble left behind, giving some indication of the scale of what had been built up in the area.

A range of goods and equipment was impounded during the operation. Among the items seized were a steel table, two chairs, a mattress, a tent, six steel rods, a bucket of tools, half a crate of tools, a cooler bag, a bag of clothing and a plastic container with clothing. Four impoundment notices were issued to those affected.

Operations of this nature are carried out by the city on a rolling basis as part of efforts to enforce the Street Trading By-laws and address associated contraventions across Johannesburg’s various regions
