Two-year water leak in Boskruin angers ward councillor

Johannesburg Water has finally assessed the leak on Kelly Avenue in Boskruin after the water challenges in the area.

A two-year water leak on Kelly Avenue in Boskruin has caused frustration for Ward 134 councillor Devon Steenkamp despite numerous reports and escalations.

With all the water issues in the area, Steenkamp is disappointed with Joburg Water (JW) for not addressing them promptly. On Kelly Avenue, water has been gushing from an underground pipe, creating a pond next to a resident’s fence.

On April 1 this year, the JW spokesperson, Nombuso Shabalala, said that the entity had no recorded evidence or confirmed reports of the recurring leak at the specified location.
The matter remained under review, and Steenkamp has been engaging the JW Randburg depot, sharing pin locations and pictures as they struggled to locate the leak.

Shabalala said a technical team was dispatched. However, the team was unable to locate the reported leak on site. Further investigations were prioritised once more precise location details were provided. The root cause could not be conclusively determined, as the reported leak could not be located during the site inspection.

Months later, the pond remains with water bubbling out of the pipe. Steenkamp confirmed that the entity has assessed the leak following the water issues affecting Randpark Ridge, Bromhof and Boksruin.

“It took a water crisis for them to take this leak seriously. Do we have to wait for a disaster to strike before they can focus on all the outstanding leaks around our areas?” asked Steenkamp.

“They have inspected it, and they finally confirmed that a pipe and a clamp are needed to repair this particular leak. We can see how clear the water is, bubbling to show that there are millions of litres being wasted, and that’s fresh, clean water that should be going in taps instead; it’s being lost in the ground, causing lots of issues in the neighbouring areas.”

Questions were sent to Joburg Water for an update after their assessment, and will be published once available.
