Ward councillor frustrated over months-long pipe burst on Long Avenue in Ferndale

A water leak on Long Avenue in Ferndale is creating more problems as the running water damages other streets.

Ward 104 councillor Emi Koekemoer has expressed growing frustration over a burst pipe that has been left unattended for several months, causing water to continuously flow down a busy road and creating dangerous conditions for both motorists and pedestrians.

The persistent leak is situated at the corner of Long Avenue and Rocky Street.

It has severely damaged the Rocky Street surface, resulting in large potholes and deep erosion along one side of the street.

As the damage worsened, motorists were forced to use only a single lane, causing traffic congestion and increasing the risk of accidents.

“The situation has become unacceptable,” said Koekemoer. “Water has been running down this road for months, weakening the road structure and creating massive holes.”

She added that one can see it has been leaking for a long time, because there is now algae growing along the tarred road.

“The most surprising part is that the regional manager of Region B was here just over a month ago.

He claimed that he will make sure that the leak is dealt with due to the number of times the JRA had to fix and resurface the section of Rocky Street. Here we are, another month later, and our natural spring of Ferndale is still here.”

Repeated complaints and escalations have been submitted to Joburg Water, but no progress has been made in repairing the damaged pipe.

Motorists are urged to be cautious when driving on Rocky Street, as drivers have resorted to driving into the oncoming lane to avoid the holes, creating further safety concerns.

Questions were sent to Joburg Water on June 23. Their response will be published once made available.
