Residents in the Randburg area are being urged to take extra precautions following a noticeable increase in reported rape cases, with investigators noting that several incidents involve meetings arranged through dating apps.

An advisory was issued by Colonel Sipho Dlamini, who called on community members, particularly women, to exercise heightened caution in their daily lives.

“Your safety is paramount,” the advisory read. “By taking these basic precautions, we reduce risk and protect one another.” Investigations into the incidents remain ongoing, but the emerging pattern has prompted authorities to issue specific guidance around online safety. Residents are advised not to agree to a first meeting at a private residence or any secluded location, and instead to arrange initial meetings only at well-lit, busy public places such as cafés or restaurants.

Anyone meeting a stranger for the first time is urged to inform a trusted friend, family member, or colleague of their plans beforehand, sharing the location, time, and contact details of the person they are meeting. Arranging independent transport to and from such meetings is also strongly recommended.

Beyond online safety, Dlamini’s advisory also addresses general personal safety. Residents are asked to remain aware of their surroundings at all times, especially when walking to vehicles or parking areas after dark. Walking alone in poorly lit or isolated areas should be avoided where possible, with people encouraged to move in groups or make use of a security escort if available.

Authorities further reminded residents to trust their instincts. If a situation feels unsafe, they should remove themselves immediately and report it to the nearest authority. Any suspicious activity can be reported to the South African Police Service on the emergency number 10111.
