MTN brings financial skills to Zandspruit youth

MTN Group Fintech wrapped up its 21 Days of Y'ello Care campaign with a hands-on financial literacy activation in Zandspruit, equipping over 100 community members with budgeting tools and mentorship.

Young people in Zandspruit are walking away with stronger financial skills and greater confidence in managing their money following a community activation hosted by MTN Group Fintech as part of its annual employee volunteerism campaign.

The MoMo Financial Aid Kit activation took place at the Emthonjeni Community Centre on June 25, marking the conclusion of MTN Group Fintech’s 21 Days of Y’ello Care campaign, which ran under the theme: Expanding equitable financial health for every community.

More than 100 community members took part in the event, which offered a comprehensive financial aid kit covering health checks, budgeting workshops, financial literacy booklets, and one-on-one mentorship sessions. Participants also received access to resources aimed at helping them build lasting financial confidence well beyond the day itself. Over 40 MTN employees volunteered on the ground, supporting facilitation and mentorship throughout the sessions. Their presence helped keep the engagement practical and accessible, creating space for open conversations about everyday money challenges.

The impact was felt almost immediately. In interviews, aired on Jozi FM, young attendees spoke about a clearer understanding of how to manage expenses, plan ahead, and make more informed financial decisions.

Mosa Pakane, senior manager for group corporate affairs and public relations at MoMo from MTN, said the activation reflected the company’s broader vision for what financial inclusion should look like. “MTN Group Fintech believes that true financial inclusion is not just about access to services; it’s about empowering people with the confidence and capability to use them meaningfully.

“What we’ve seen in Zandspruit reflects the value of meeting communities where they are, and equipping them with practical tools that can support better everyday decisions over time.”

The MoMo Financial Aid Kit forms part of MTN Group Fintech’s wider focus on financial empowerment across its markets, combining education, digital tools, and direct community engagement as part of its environmental, social, and governance, as well as its digital inclusion, commitments.

Although the campaign has now concluded, MTN Group Fintech plans to extend access to digital financial education tools beyond the campaign period, allowing participants to continue building on the skills they have gained.
