Senior SAPS officer remains in custody after Randburg Magistrate’s Court postpones bail hearing
Deputy National Police Commissioner General Shadrack Sibiya, facing charges including rape and child grooming, will remain behind bars after a Gauteng court delayed his bail decision.
Deputy National Police Commissioner General Shadrack Sibiya remains in custody after the Randburg Magistrate’s Court postponed his bail hearing to October 1.
He faces five charges: rape, trafficking in persons, promoting the sexual grooming of a child, and two counts of sexual grooming of a child.
He was arrested on September 21 and first appeared in court the following day. The National Prosecuting Authority said the charges relate to incidents between May 16 and August 3, and that the state will oppose bail.

In a written affidavit, Sibiya said the charges are false and trumped up, describing the plan to arrest him as diabolical. He said he and the complainant had consensual sex, denying the rape charge. The state alleges that he gave the complainant alcohol before raping her.
A key part of his bail application is a SAPS disciplinary hearing scheduled for November 6 to 9. The accused told the court he needs to be released to prepare for it.
The defence presented affidavits and witness testimony. A large number of police officers were inside and outside the court.
The hearing continues on October 1.
