Joburg Water plans heavy-duty steel covers to protect Jan Smuts Avenue infrastructure

Joburg Water has confirmed plans for a permanent solution to address recurring pipe leaks and incomplete road reinstatement on Jan Smuts Avenue in the Randburg CBD.

Contractors for the entity left the reinstatement unfinished after fixing a leak in the middle of the road.

Joburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala said the entity conducted investigations and site inspections to assess the situation and determine the underlying cause of the persistent problem.

Repairs have taken place multiple times, and the entity now plans to install heavy-duty steel covers to protect the infrastructure and prevent further disruption.

“Investigations were undertaken to determine the cause of the recurring failures,” said Shabalala.

She said findings revealed that the site is being continuously vandalised by taxi washers operating in the area.

“This ongoing vandalism results in repeated damage to the infrastructure, requiring the site to be revisited despite previous repairs,” Shabalala said. “The depot is currently awaiting quotations from the reinstatement contractors. Once the quotations have been reviewed and approved, the relevant parties will proceed with the necessary repair and reinstatement works to resolve the issue.”

She added that the entity will continue to carry out temporary repairs as and when faults are reported.

“The primary challenge at the site is not related to service delivery, but rather the persistent vandalism caused by external parties, including taxi washers,” Shabalala said. “This ongoing interference continues to compromise the integrity of the infrastructure and undermines repair efforts.”

The entity said it remains committed to resolving the issue and restoring the site to a satisfactory condition.

Questions were sent to the Randburg Taxi Rank regarding the taxi washers’ claims. Their response will be published once made available.
