Hot ice victory for SA

RANDBURG - One of the South African Ice Hockey U18 team's members is from Randburg.

Northgate ice hockey player Nicholas Baard was chosen for the South African U18 national team.

The team flew to Izmit, Turkey to participate in the International Ice Hockey Federation U18 Div III B World Championships.

They played against Hong Kong and Turkey, beating Hong Kong 8-3 and Turkey 2-1 in a gruelling final match.

The team came home with the gold trophy and have moved up a division. The team will play against New Zealand, Bulgaria and Belgium next year in up coming tournaments.

Baard, a pupil at Trinityhouse High School in Randpark Ridge, started to play ice hockey with the Northgate Sweepers and he now plays with the Pretoria Capitals.
